My art is small minded and boring!!!

Well, that is according to another artist with a bone to pick! He said that I "only painted cats" and it bored him! Hmmmm, can this be TRUE?

Well yeah - I do paint a lot of cats. People tend to like them! I like them! Personally I think that anyone who doesn't like cats is probalby a little small minded. You have to be large minded to like cats!

But that's hardly all I paint. If he had bothered to look at my eBay he would have seen what I have up at the moment...

I'm kind of a bit confused as to how this could be confused with a cat... Doesn't look like a cat to me. Doesn't really look that small minded either. What do you think?

Saving for a harp!

Selling on eBay again - saving up for a harp! Will need something to do while I'm recovering. See, I am having an operation on my leg that is going to keep me confined to quarters for a period of weeks to months. Yucky and boring and without computer or paints!

So I'm selling paintings like crazy on eBay :)

Licorice is helping me by being cute and giving me lots of things to paint.

Painting other things too - like landscapes and cows. Haven't put the cows up yet, but here is a landscape

Elephants on sale

I've got some progress photos of my backdrop. All I have to do now is to do the background - the sky and the ground - and then a row of two tone dots between that and the rest of the border.

Only 1.5" x 1.75", yet incredibly detailed and lifelike!

This tiny painting was done in oil paints on art board. This week it is available via here, my blog, for $49 which includes the postage worldwide. If it doesn't sell this week, next week I will list it on eBay starting at that price.

I work very hard to make my miniatures as good as I can - my goal is to enter and win competitions with them this year! I'm joining the Miniature Art Society, just as soon as they send me the entry forms.

A general update

Lately I've been painting miniatures - really teeny tiny paintings, 1.5" x 2" or even, sometimes, smaller! Art Cards suddenly seem like murals!

And talking about murals I've been asked to paint a 7 foot by 6 foot one for the Basenji Rescue group. I've done them a portrait to raffle as well. Haven't taken a photo of the portrait yet, so I can't show you.

I've decided that I'm going to put up a picture here each week for a week before I list it on eBay - that way you get to have a go at buying it at a set price before it goes to auction. The price I'm going to ask for it here will be the starting price on eBay, so it will be better to buy from here!

This is an oil painting on gallery stretched canvas, the good thicker stuff (1.5" deep). It is 8" x 10". Price will be $49 if you buy it from here, with $20 postage if you are in the US or other country which isn't Australia (which includes insurance). If you are in Australia postage will be $12 for the east coast and $15 for WA, which includes insurance.

That's Licorice, isn't she the most adorable thing? I'm told that the "white" spots will go orange when she grows up. She is so affectionate and loves being held. She rolls onto her back and waves her legs at you, wanting to play. She will be 4 weeks old on Saturday night.

Yeah yeah, well, I've been busy! This is a combination of clayboard (white) indian ink and burnt umber watercolour paint, scratched and touched up. It's my first using this method and I think it's pretty kewl. I'll be having it framed and taking it to the expo.

If you are very good little boys and girls tomorrow I will show you the silver cat and the copper dog I scratched.

God I'm tired.

It came about jokingly, but we couldn't get it out of our minds so we went for it! It's for our smaller pieces of art that we are going to sell for exactly $50.

Fairy Dreams

Ah, tis done! Still a few loose ends to tie off, the interview to put up (Thank you Thomas!) and some sort of demonstration or tutorial to put together, but the majority of the site is done and the hard bits are finished!

Fairies anyone?

I'm not going to show you a painting today. I've been working on the new Fairy-Dreams website instead of painting.

Anyone want to help? I need someone who is really good at computer graphics and loves fantasy art to help come up with some graphics for the pages. We have a logo, but I'm not in love with it (it's based around the sleeping fairy that I showed you before). I also need little icons for the library section of the site, 28 pixels by 30 pixels to illustrate "romance" "horror" etc - categories for the stories to go into.

I'm not that good with computer graphics! It's not my "thing". I know that there is someone out there that would LOVE to help, I just have to find you! (yoooo hooo, where are you?!)

For your help you get credit on the site with links to wherever you like, and a free access to upload to the galleries - and yes, you can sell your work from the gallery.

After spending 6 years at Elfwood, 5 of them working as a join admin, moderator, member of the ERB and support, I have been very disillusioned at the way it's heading. It's just too big. Poor Thomas has been overwhelmed by teenagers - many of whom are now running the show. I finally removed my gallery from there and now need somewhere else to put my fantasy art.

So I'm starting "Fairy-Dreams".

Because of the problems at Elfwood I hadn't felt like making Fantasy art for a long time, but last night, after thinking about Fairy Dreams, I did, so I started this Fairy.

This is as much as I did before I had to sleep. It's 16" X 20". I have no idea what's going to go behind her yet, I keep changing my mind. She is on a grassy field, maybe in front of a big rock. Any suggestions?

Frida coming out of the shadows - the second of my "shadows" series. Genesis paints on watercolor paper, 5" x 7".

I'm getting use to working with the Genesis paints. These ones have a lot of texture, at the moment I'm working on one that is more like an acrylic - very smooth.

I've had so little time for blogging - I'd say recently but I really only started blogging recently! My life is just too hectic!

Well, my art comes first - always.

Here is a sparrow. I like sparrows, they are cute. I like the way that they hop. Bounce bounce bounce.

It's really hard to create when you are down. I'm feeling much better now (thank you to all the nice people who wrote!)

This is the first of a new series I'm doing "Shadows". I'm painting for *me* now, if people like them that's nice, but I don't care if they don't. I'm tired of doing pretty flowers and kittens.

That doesn't mean that I won't go back to flowers and kittens, but it will be when *I* want to, not because I have to.

Anyway, this one is for sale on ebay, and if you are interested you could get it at a really good price, eBay being what it is.

Weird, Weirder, Weirdest

Welcome to my nightmare. The whole story about it is on ebay

What else is happening? I'm too down to paint, I can't do anything to get ready for this show. It's still over a month away so I hope things improve or else I won't be going, and I'll be left with 20 paintings and poorer by $250 (the entry fee) plus materials and advertising.

I sold my galahs (had to because I've developed asthma), the last kitten went, and then, the very next day we had to have our old cat Diamunda put to sleep.

The Painted Puss

Today I started a new website! "The Painted Puss" http://www.painted-puss.com is a group site for cat artists. Already there is some pretty nice work there! Go check it out.

This painting of a Calla Lily is huge. It's 3 foot by 4 foot and the biggest I can do without having to move house. Bad lighting on the photo - it's still wet and it's in the dark bedroom so the cats won't go leaning against it! But you get the idea. It's pretty impressive in person!

Prince Rupert

I thought it was about time I offered another painting for sale here on my blog. This is Prince Rupert - you remember him, he is one of my kittens from Chantilly Lace.

Painting is 8" x 10", oil on canvas. $120 which includes postage worldwide - this is a discount as I have him listed for $150 from my website!

Hopefully he (the kitten, not the painting) will sell this weekend. His mother is tired of him trying to suckle, and if he stays around any longer I am not going to want to part with him! I don't want to part with him now :(

Where does the week go? Where does the YEAR go? Notice how as you get older time goes faster? By the time I'm 60 I'll get up, go to the bathroom and it will be time to go back to bed! Actually, that sounds ok...

Back to the grisaille! Second layer of glaze put on the flowers and the wall. I'll get rid of the line on the wall the next layer, it isn't working. I thought the flowers were too pink, but looking at them again against the yellowy wall I think maybe that's ok. Next time I'll do the leaves and the vase and the floor again, then have a break and think about it.

Scratchboards colored

After you make a picture on your scratchboard you can colour it with watercolor or acrylic. Then you can scratch away any areas that need re-highlighting again. I like them both ways, although when you get such a brightly coloured subject like this rooster you just have to colour it!

With the Westie I left most uncoloured and just gave his eyes a coat. Looks cute doesn't it?

Scratchboard

As you might know by now, I have a day at an art expo coming up. I thought it would be good to actually be doing some art while waiting for people to come with billions of dollars for my art (I can dream, can't I?)

Obviously oils are out of the question. I could take watercolors, but I'd like people to think that I was a GOOD artist, so probably not. I could draw, but how boring is that? So I thought about scratchboard. I'd never tried it before so I went to my art supply store and asked my friend there about it. She said "love, it's $45 a sheet. I wouldn't sell it to you unless you were sure of selling it!". Fair enough, she is a friend, not just a sales person, I'll take her advice. She told me how to "make my own". Let me say something about making your own. Don't, it sucks. Fortunately I spend enough at this store so that every few months I get a $50 voucher - and I just got one. So, armed with my voucher I marched back in and told her that I did want to buy a sheet of scratch board stuff. She was right - it is expensive, but what a difference having the correct product makes! It is so easy to scratch into and the results are immediate and very satisfying. It does take a long time, even a Art Card size uses hundreds of lines.

Now, what to charge for these tiny bits of artistic brilliance?

First layer of glaze

This is the grisaille I started the other day, with the first layer of glaze. I think I lost some detail in the petals, but I'll get that back in the next layer.

This is a rose painting that is being done the same way - and this is the first layer of colour for it as well.

That funny little face looking up at us belongs to Prince Rupert. The poor kitty trying to sleep while he plays with her is Princess (now at her new home!) and the other is Little Miss - fast asleep.

Grisaille - Vase of Tulips

This is a "Grisaille" - a painting done using only shades of grey. But wait, there is more. Once this dries I will go over it with several layers of tinted glaze to bring up the color. I've never done this before so I hope I don't wreck it! I've done a rough one of some tomatoes to practise on before I touch this one again!

It took 5 hours just to get it to this stage. It's 8" x 10".

I will probably put the first layer of glaze on Wednesday if it's dry by then.

In the mean time I'm painting pretty pink Calla Lilies :) (show you tomorrow)

A rose by any other name

8 x 10 inch oil painting. This one will go in the show, framed of course in a lovely old fashion gold frame.

Yesterday I did a few grisaille's - which are under paintings in shades of grey. When they are dry you glaze over them with thin layers of color and build it up that way. I really enjoyed the process of working in just shades of grey and I think it will be something I do regularly. All depends on how the glazes turn out!

I'll show you as I go. Tomorrow I'll put up the underpainting. I promise!

Busy busy...

I've had such a hectic time these past 3 days I haven't had time to update. I've done a rose painting and a portrait of a cat (commission). Tomorrow I'll have time to update properly!

My kittens are almost all gone. Princess has gone to a new home. Little Miss is having someone come and look at her tonight, and I expect that she will go, the woman was so excited. That will leave me with only Prince Rupert, and I'm going to miss him horribly when he goes!

I really suck at names

Only rarely do I come up with a good name for a painting, and almost never when it's a nude, or a flower, or a landscape or something plebeian like that.

I see other artist's works and they have bright and snappy names and you think "Yes! That's EXACTLY what that one is!" and I call mine "Nude #492".

So I thought, why not mobilize the troops?

I'm asking for help. What is the name of this painting?

Shih Tzu, Abby Lane

Beautiful dog with a wonderful silky coat. I wasn't sure I could do it justice but I'm pleased with the way it turned out. This photograph was taken under a neon light, at night, no flash, so it isn't the best. I'll take another once it's dry.

8" x 10", oil on canvas. Not for sale because it's sold to the owner.

At the moment I'm working on a nude. I'm not sure I'll have it finished to be posted tomorrow or not.

Devon Rex Kittens - Oil Painting

These two mischief makers are Prince Rupert and Little Princess. They are 6 weeks old in this painting and just so adorable. I have painted so many pictures of their mother (Katznkurls Chantilly Lace) I thought it was about time to start on the next generation. No doubt Chantilly will continue to be one of my main models though!

They will be going to new homes soon, and I'll miss them. The cheeky things!
